1st Phase: Pain Relief
The main reason why people visit an osteopath is that they experience pain that won't go away with medication or creams. In this first stage of care, our main goal is to reduce your symptoms. Sometimes this will require frequent visits or two to three visits per week for some time.
Occasionally, after the first or second visit we hear people say:
"I'm not in pain anymore."
"I'm completely fine now because the pain has stopped!"
Unfortunately, this is not true. In fact, pain and other symptoms frequently only appear after a disease or other condition has become advanced.
For example, if we fall off a bike, we get injured and then we experience pain. The same thing applies to cardiovascular disease. Regardless of whether you are talking about cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stress or problems with the spine, pain is usually the last thing to appear.
When you begin chiropractic care, pain is also the first symptom to disappear, even though much of the underlying condition remains. At this point, we proceed to 2nd Phase: Rehabilitation.
